HEWELL (WINDY) AND HAZEL WINDHAM
I started my career with the BOP on March 20, 1961, at the USP, Atlanta, Georgia. After several changes in positions and moves to different locations, I retired from the North Central Regional Office in April 1984.
I joined the National FPRA (Federal Prison Retirees Association) in April 1984 and back in Atlanta, I attended the local chapter retirees meetings. I was soon elected President of the chapter and served many years off and on as president until 2009.
During the past 27 years of retirement, my wife and I have been very fortunate to attend 20 of the annual FPRA national conventions. We have traveled to several parts of the country and visited numerous institutions coast-to-coast. We have enjoyed the planned activities, but mainly the chance to see old friends and make new ones in the BOP family. The conventions have been a special part of our retirement.
We especially thank those chapters who volunteered to host the national conventions and the individuals who have led the national organization through the years.
I encourage all new retirees to join the national organization, attend local meetings, and attend the national conventions if possible.
